I was inspired to make my film about this genre because I'm really drawn to the "dark arts," for example the franchise Nightmare on Elm Street. With the first film in this series, the movie starts out with the introduction of the main character as he begins to make his well-known bladed work glove. The opening scene goes on giving meaning to the movie's title in which another character frantically goes around an abandoned factory being chased by Freddy, after which awaking thinking she was in a nightmare only to realize it may have not just been a nightmare. This film inspired me through its twisted way the antagonist of the movie used something as simples a dream, which is normally a place where someone can go to escape from reality, to attack his victims. The theme of horror in the movies in this franchise is further emphasized with Freddy's commonly distinguish burns, disfigured face, red-and-green striped sweater, brown fedora, and trademark metal-clawed brown leather glove only on his right hand. Throughout the franchise Freddy is portrayed as a powerful force that is invincible in his dream world; however, whenever he is pulled into the real world, which inspired me the most to create a horror film opening, the victims now have the upper hand because Freddy is now vulnerable to all harm. Another film that inspired me to work on a horror film opening is the Child’s Play/ Chucky series. This movie inspires me because just like my previous film chosen this franchise starts out with a single mother buying a doll for her son, again something thought to bring peace and joy is manipulated to cause fear and horror. With the development of the film, the viewers recognize that this thought to be a harmless doll is being possessed by a serial killer. Relating to the horror genre, the serial killer in this film goes through the entirety of the franchise trapped inside a doll because of his continuous failed and murderous attempts to leave the doll and possess a new human host to restart a new life in which he is not wanted by the police. The main thing that draws me to this film was the way horror was used to terrorize and create fear with something that is normalized as a child’s best friend. To finalize my inspiration for the horror genre is the movie IT. Seen again as well as the other films mentioned, this movie chooses to portray the meaning of horror using a clown, although not accepted by everyone this is another this that is loved and normally used to created joy and excitement is manipulated as a way to spread panic and terror. The film takes place in Derry, Maine in the summer of 1989 where 7 children are being terrorized by an insane clown, IT. This clown uses the personal demons and inner fears the kids have created tension to feed off their panic. Overall, these films all worked together with the one thing they had in common to inspire me to create a horror film opening, which was the fact that they manipulated something simple that is not meant to do harm to create horror and panic.
